Royal Gramma Basslet | Gramma loreto

The Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto), also known as the Fairy Basslet, is a vibrant Caribbean reef fish recognized for its striking purple-and-yellow coloration. Its brilliant purple anterior gradually transitions into a bright yellow posterior, making it one of the most recognizable and popular fish in the marine aquarium hobby. Royal Grammas are generally peaceful but can be territorial around their preferred caves and hiding spots. They are also known for their unusual habit of swimming upside down beneath rock ledges and overhangs.

Provide plenty of live rock, caves, and shaded overhangs where the Royal Gramma can establish a territory and retreat when necessary. Although generally peaceful toward other fish, they may display territorial behavior toward similar-looking species or other basslets, particularly in smaller aquariums. Feed a varied diet of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or frozen preparations. Their manageable size, hardy nature, and spectacular coloration make Royal Grammas an excellent addition to both beginner and established reef aquariums.
