Dwarf Seahorse | Hippocampus zosterae
Dwarf Seahorse | Hippocampus zosterae
The Dwarf Seahorse (Hippocampus zosterae) is one of the smallest seahorse species in the world and is native to shallow seagrass habitats throughout Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and surrounding waters. Reaching only around 1–2 inches in length, these miniature seahorses use their prehensile tails to anchor themselves to seagrasses, macroalgae, gorgonians, and other posts while waiting for tiny prey to pass by. Stinging corals & anemones should be completely avoided.
Care Level: Difficult / Specialized
Maximum Size: 2 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 2–5 gallons (species-specific setup recommended)

Diet: Carnivore / Live Food Feeder
Temperature: 70–76°F
Specific Gravity: 1.020–1.025
pH: 8.0–8.4
Dwarf Seahorses have specialized requirements and are best maintained in a dedicated species aquarium rather than a typical community reef. Their small size requires gentle water movement, appropriately sized hitching posts, and tankmates should generally be avoided. Unlike larger seahorses, Dwarf Seahorses typically require frequent feedings of live, enriched baby brine shrimp and other suitably tiny live prey. Their aquarium should be carefully maintained to prevent uneaten food and waste from degrading water quality. With proper feeding and a thoughtfully designed setup, Hippocampus zosterae is a fascinating species ideal for experienced aquarists interested in maintaining a dedicated miniature seahorse habitat.
