Banded Pipefish | Doryrhamphus dactyliophorus

The Banded Pipefish (Dunckerocampus dactyliophorus), also known as the Ringed Pipefish, is a striking relative of the seahorse recognized by its elongated body, bold red-and-white bands, and colorful tail. Unlike many pipefish, this species is an active swimmer and can often be seen cruising through caves and rockwork in search of food.

Banded Pipefish are best kept in mature, established reef aquariums with plenty of live rock, caves, and sheltered areas. They naturally feed on small crustaceans and zooplankton, so a healthy population of copepods can be beneficial. Many individuals will also accept appropriately sized frozen foods such as enriched mysis and brine shrimp. Because they are deliberate feeders, they should be housed with peaceful tankmates that will not aggressively outcompete them for food. With proper feeding and a stable environment, the Banded Pipefish makes a unique and beautiful addition to a peaceful reef aquarium.
